Scope of Work:
Monumental elliptical stair.

In 2009, Daniel was contracted by local structural steel fabricator North State Steel to fabricate and install a monumental staircase in the Genomic Sciences building on the campus of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The project is the second staircase that Daniel has done with the architecture firm Skidmore, Owens, and Merrill. Each of the 12 stingers that make up the stair were built stood up in Daniel’s shop in custom fabricated jigs. The entire staircase is supported off of six 2×6 solid steel bars that run from top to bottom of the stair opening. The triangular tube trusses in the landing take the brunt of the stair’s loading. Another interesting aspect of the stair case is the internal balustrade system which is constructed of 92 1/2″ stainless steel rods 4″ on center, connected under each tread with custom machined couplers from 1-1/4″ solid stainless steel round bar. The ongoing project should be complete in early spring of 2012. Stay tuned for more pictures of the staircase upon completion.
